PEORIA, Ill. — The annual Grand Nationals Weekend is taking a year off.
Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment (JGEE) announced the “hiatus” of the Grand Nationals Weekend that was initially set for Aug. 16-18, in conjunction with the TT races. The TT races will still be held at the PMC Race Park, though the entertainment surrounding the event is changing. JGEE said it is taking the year off due to a high number of competing events, including a competing concert event being held that Sunday night.
“Things got a bit more difficult last year with the races being moved from Sunday to Saturday, forcing us to move our bigger concert to Friday night” JGEE wrote. “And then this year, the Peoria Park District Riverfront division decided to work with another promoter to put a very competitive event on the Sunday following the races, in contradiction of its stated policy of a radius around events protecting them from competition.”
“In addition to adding the competing event, the Park District made unrealistic operational demands like the full event being torn down and cleaned up by 7am on Sunday,” the statement continued. “Due to these factors, we have decided it was not worth the very significant financial investment and risk to try and force something to work.”
Emily Cahill from the park district provided the following statement:
“The Peoria Park District does not have a policy like the one Goldberg references and we often facilitate multiple events in a weekend. We have long valued our relationship with JGEE but understand that the change in race dates made the event more difficult.“
JGEE wrote the intention is for it to solely be a one-year hiatus and to work with the Peoria Park District again to “bring back one of Peoria’s longest running and most successful events on the riverfront.”
