Anderson-Davis Summer Basketball Camp Known For More Than Hoops

Active Life

PEORIA, Ill. — It’s a basketball camp that’s known for being more than just a basketball camp.

Yes, there are 400 youth players expected to attend the Mitchell Anderson-Dana Davis All-Star basketball camp this week. Yes, they are hoping to better their games.

But the camp, which runs through Thursday at the Peoria Civic Center, may be best known for giving out school supplies and providing free health screenings.

“It’s different because of everything we provide for the children, the campers. I think the “free” is what really does it,” said camp co-director Jonelle McCloud, who’s been with the camp for 16 years. “And just because something is free doesn’t mean that it is not good. This is a great camp, you learn so much.”

The free camp is 24-years-old this summer, McCloud said.
