SHIRLEY, Ill. – The left lane on I-55 southbound near Shirley is shut down due to road buckling. This closure is at mile marker 155, just south of Bloomington near Shirley.
This comes after severe hot weather across the nation threatens to impact infrastructure, causing damages like road buckling.
Earlier this week, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) told motorists to be on the lookout for pavement buckling on roads throughout the state as extreme heat continues to roll in.
“The hottest week of the year means the potential for pavement failures will increase,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “At IDOT, we will have the necessary staffing and materials in place to make repairs as quickly as possible. We ask the public to stay alert and avoid driving over buckled roads, if possible, while giving our crews plenty of room to work.”
Police are waiting on IDOT to fix the road. There’s no indication as to when the road will fully reopen.
