Coroner: Body Found Near Illinois River Being ‘Investigated as a Homicide’

The Peoria County Coroner updated WMBD News on the cause of death of the Peoria man found dead along the Peoria riverfront on Friday.

Johnna Ingersoll said that Justin Marx, 26, suffered multiple chest stab wounds and that strangulation was also a “contributing factor” to his death. That was the conclusion after a preliminary autopsy was performed Saturday.

The incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

As WMBD News reported Friday, the body of Marx was found in a rocky embankment along Peoria’s riverfront in an area near Constitution Gardens. Two people found his body while they were using the park.

He was last known to be living at a shelter.

Marx was found partially clothed an the coroner said that clothes were found nearby.

Peoria Police Department originally said it did not suspect foul play.

WMBD News will share updates on the investigation as they become available.
