1.1 million dollars of suspected cocaine seized during traffic stop

EFFINGHAM, Ill. - A traffic stop on Interstate 70 resulted in the confiscation of 65 kilograms of suspected cocaine.

On Saturday, May 5 an ISP trooper initiated a traffic stop on a rental truck for traffic violations. During the traffic stop, approximately 65 kilograms of suspected cocaine was discovered. The driver, Emigdio Penuelas-Medina, 53, of Las Vegas, NV was charged with Trafficking a Controlled Substance.

The street value of the suspected cocaine was approximately $1,100,000.00.

Mr. Penuelas-Medina was incarcerated at the Fayette County Jail. The Fayette County State’s Attorney and Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force assisted with the investigation. “The Illinois State Police remain focused on battling the unlawful trafficking of illicit substances and criminal activity in and around our communities,” said ISP Commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt.
