Local churches in the River City are banding together to bring joy and comfort to families in need this holiday season.
Not only is Divergent City Church in Peoria working to bring 200 families food this Thanksgiving, but they’re also partnering with two other churches.
“It’s something we take for granted every year,” said Gary Velasquez, lead pastor Divergent City Church. “We’re planning the menu. We’re planning where we’re going. We’re planning how much we’re eating. How much leftovers we’re going to have, but yet there’s the reality that some families can’t even afford to put a meal together. The food scarcity in this city is a very real issue so we just want to play a small part in having an impact on that issue.”
This is the second year for their efforts and right now, they’re in need of volunteers to either donate financially or help with delivering these meals.
“We’re partnering with two other churches so it’s a total of three churches in two strategic locations, both of which are food deserts in our city just to really make one impact,” said Pastor Velasquez. “200 families, three different churches, two locations to make one impact here in our city.”
Velasquez says this effort costs about $30 per family to provide a full Thanksgiving meal, which includes a turkey, rolls, vegetables and more.
