Unit 5 is making changes to its bus transportation this school year. After an accidental bus crash last year, the district added a pilot program, making it mandatory for students swipe their ID’s before entering the bus.

Leaders of the district say this new method will keep track of ridership numbers.

“Having the new ID’s in place for transportation will assist us,” said James Harden, Human Resources Director for Unit 5. “First with safety, making sure all the kids are safe and accounted for, second with efficiency, making sure the right kids get on the right bus and lastly with adding a blanket of security.”

Right now only 9 schools in the district use the new system. Unit 5 plans to eventually implement it at all of its schools.
