A new TIF district will be coming to downtown Bloomington. The City Council met tonight to discuss approving a TIF for the East Washington Project Area and what this will mean for the city.
Mayor Renner and the staff believed it to be a no brainer as they voted unanimously on the decision but the TIF raised eyebrows for the union workers who were in attendance.
“As local labor we have been trying to talk to this developer for a number of months and we could never get a return phone call or a response back,” said Michael Matejka, Great Plains Laborer. “I think its very important as a city staff and local economic forces we do whatever we can to ensure local people and contractors are employed on these projects.”
Some staff members felt like the district itself should be shrunk and made larger with time but the overall consensus felt Bloomington needed the TIF to help improve and enhance the downtown area.
There are still some kinks to be worked out within the agreement but overall the council and staff were happy with the decision.
