The Back2School Alliance hosted its annual backpack and supply giveaway at Grossinger Motors Arena on Thursday.

More than 5000 students attended to receive backpacks, binders and other miscellaneous first day of school supplies. Leaders of the alliance say, the Back2School Giveaway never gets old because they get to help students start off on the right foot.

“I can’t tell you how sad it feels, to a teacher, to classmates and to other kids, to see someone that comes in without the stuff they need,” said Jan Meadows, Chairwoman of the Back2School Alliance and organizer of the event. “It sets them apart right from the beginning and a teachers first job every year is to build community, and in order to do that you have to have a learning community for everybody to be a part of.”

Lines began forming at 6:30 a.m. and the event lasted until 5 p.m. It took more than 300 volunteers to pass out all of the supplies.
