Additional Behavorial Health Services Coming to Peoria Public Schools

Peoria Public Schools is getting more resources for your child’s social and emotional health. The social emotional learning department was established last year. The board considered an expansion tonight. Peoria Public Schools board of education met Monday to discuss these new programs.

All agenda items were passed. now there is a contract with family core for counseling services. The contract provides district students with more than 9 full time employees to oversee attendance intervention and suspension prevention services. Those services are for at-risk students in 9 Peoria Schools.

And 6 behavioral health therapists have been hired thru a contract with The Children’s Home.The therapists will be available during and outside of school to help struggling students. They will also meet with students families. Director of Social Emotional Learning Program Derrick Booth said it’s all to help students be able to focus on school.

“Students can’t learn unless we find a way to deal with their trauma and some of their social emotional issues, or mental health issues, and so these supports being available and coming into the schools will assist students to work on some of those social issues so that they’ll be able to learn, complete the ultimate goal of learning in the classroom” said Booth.
