AVON, Ill. — A Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy is dead after being shot during a battery and disturbance investigation.

Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard confirmed 39-year-old Troy Chisum was killed in the incident.

In a Wednesday morning press conference, officials said the suspect was taken into custody without incident at approximately 8:20 a.m. The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Nathan Woodring of Avon.

Woodring was transported to McDonough County Jail where he is being held pending formal charges.

“On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum. Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered,” said Standard.

Shots were reported shortly before 2 p.m. on E Troy Road in rural Avon on Tuesday. Illinois State Police and Fulton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were on the scene.

Earlier in the day, ISP said the suspect involved was barricaded in a home in rural Avon. ISP officials confirmed a SWAT unit, negotiators, a Life Flight and several other responders were eventually called to the scene.

“On behalf of the Illinois State Police, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Fulton County Deputy Chisum’s family, friends, and extended family at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office,” ISP Acting Director Brendan F. Kelly said. “This is the second time this year the Illinois State Police has safely apprehended an alleged cop killer. Once again, the men and women of the Illinois State Police displayed exceptional professionalism, patience and persistence as they worked side by side with our brothers and sisters through another dark and difficult moment.”

“Mercifully, this incident was concluded with no further harm to first responders, and this defendant can now be brought to justice,” Kelly said.

Sheriff Standard said Chisum was a four and a half year veteran of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. He was a paramedic with the Fulton County EMA and was a member of the West Central Special response Team and ILEAS WMD/SRT Team, Region 6.

A large procession of law enforcement traveled from Avon to OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

Officials confirmed residents were safe and the situation was contained Tuesday evening. Officers were still on the scene at approximately 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Standard extended condolences on behalf of the entire office.

Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.
