BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Barbers in McLean County are doing what they can to help the youth in the community learn valuable skills.

Through a program called Barbers with Books, kids in are invited into the shop and being asked to read aloud.

Leaders say the catalyst behind it was to try to get children off their phones and into books.

“When young people read or have a command over reading books, it gives them a better foundation in terms of education,” said Gary Muhammad, Barber at A Kut Above in Bloomington. “You have to be able to read, readers, in my opinion, are leaders.”

If a child reads a book in front of the barber they are given a discount on their haircut.

Currently, the only barbershops participating are A Kut Above, 919 W Market St, Bloomington, IL 61701 and One of a Kind Barbershop, 104 E. Monroe, Bloomington, IL  61701.
