The Better Business Bureau is warning you to be extra careful on online dating sites this Valentine’s Day.

In 2016, the FBI received more than 15 reports linked to romance scams stealing more than $230 million dollars from unsuspecting victims. Regional Director of the Business Bureau Stephanie Garland says scammers are taking advantage of peoples loneliness. She says to never send money to individuals you meet online, and warns that similar scams can happy to anyone.

“These aren’t people who are stupid. These are people who are smart, who are educated. It can happen to anybody who is gay or straight. Any kind of age, but we find it most reported among women who are in their 40’s and 50’s.” says Garland

Experts say if you feel you have been a victim of one of these scams, you should report it to the FTC and the FBI.
