Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner is defending himself against accusations of misuse of a city credit card.
State police are looking into the use of a city credit card to buy an economy class plane ticket for Bloomington Mayor Terri Renner’s girlfriend, Margot Ehrlich.
Erlich went with Renner on a city-sponsored trip to attend a sister cities celebration in Japan.
Using a California travel agency, a city of Bloomington staff member purchased the airline tickets for Renner and Ehrlich on May 12th. On May 26th, Erlich gave the city a check for the cost of her flight.
Renner says they took proper protocol throughout the process.
“Even if Margot had her ticket paid for by the city that would not have been illegal, she paid for it herself, but because she was part of the sister city delegation, the ordinance, its really clear. You can’t use things for personal reasons, that wasn’t the case here.”
Renner stands by the decision and says he would approach the situation the same way again.
“I would not handle this different any other way, this is the way the sister city did it as I understand it a decade ago cause you go every decade.”
Renner says despite these distractions he is continuing to grow the local economy, handle the budget and provide public services for the citizens of Bloomington.
