Bloomington woman gets murder charges dropped; accepts plea deal for up to 23 years

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — A Bloomington woman pled guilty of aggravated battery for her role in the death of her boyfriend in 2017.

According to Assistant States Attorney Brad Rigdon, 24-year-old Brittney Mikesell and her boyfriend, Cullen Hedrick, arrived at a Bloomington trailer park two years ago to fight someone.

Mikesell, armed with pepper spray, and Hedrick with a machete, approached the wrong guy who then killed her boyfriend, out of sell defense, with a knife.

Mikesell was initially charged with murder and mob action, because under Illinois law if you are committing a crime with someone and that person gets killed you are charged with the murder.

Monday, Mikesell accepted a plea for 3 counts of aggravated battery and could spend up to 23 years in prison.

However, because she is credited for her time spent so far, if she displays good behavior she could be out in the next decade.
