UPDATE: Peoria officer released from hospital

PEORIA, Ill. - UPDATE: 2-7-2018

Peoria Police Department spokeswoman Amy Dotson confirms the officer shot Thursday, February 1st has been released from the hospital. 
The department is still withholding the names of the officers involved in the incident. 



A Peoria Heights man has been identified as the suspect who allegedly shot a Peoria Police Officer early this morning before being gunned down.

33 year-old Daniel El was pronounced dead by the Peoria County Coroner about 3:45 a.m.

Court records show El served time in prison for residential burglary and armed robbery convictions in 2004.

Peoria Police Chief Jerry Mitchell says one of the officers involved in this incident was also part of the shooting death of Eddie Russell Jr. last September.


A spokesperson for the Peoria Police department says a suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the shooting that took place after a traffic stop.

The unidentified officer involved has non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition at a local hospital.


A Peoria Police officer was shot near SW Jefferson Ave. in Peoria just after 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Details are limited at this time but WMBD has a crew on the scene.
