The company Unit 5 contracts to bus students is responding to Wednesday's deadly semi vs. bus crash.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. This is a difficult time for all of us involved, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the basketball team, the school and the entire Unit 5 community. We will do all that we can to support the community during this heartbreaking time. Our driver remains hospitalized. He is an experienced driver with a strong driving record. Our team has been in contact with his family to provide support." Jay Brock, spokesperson from First Student, wrote.
Just after 8:30 P.M. Wednesday the bus was taking the Normal West JV girls basketball team home from a game in Champaign when it was hit head-on by a semi trailer.
The 8 Normal students on the bus were taken to hospitals but have now been released.
Longtime team volunteer, Charlie Crabtree, was killed in the collision.
The team's coach, Steve Price, is currently recovering at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
The First Student bus driver remains hospitalized and there is no word on his condition.
The driver of the semi, Ryan Hute of Delmar, IA, was killed.
