If you’re planning a trip to Starved Rock this Memorial Day weekend you might want to be prepared for a packed crowd.
This weekend, along with every other weekend during the busy summer months, are expected to be filled with traffic delays as visitors travel through the state to see Starved Rock.
To ease traffic congestion, the park is advising drivers coming from the east on I-80 to consider exiting Ottawa, cross the Illinois River, and approach the park from the east on IL Rt. 71. If needed, you can also exit southbound on I-39 and the IL Rt. 71 exit at Oglesby.
The park also recommends you to monitor the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates on traffic delays and temporary parking closures.
“Illinois Conservation Police and state park staff will be on hand monitoring traffic flows,” says Rafael Gutierrez from the IDNR Office of Law Enforcement. “We encourage motorists to slow down, be patient, and follow directions near Starved Rock State Park.”
The heaviest traffic congestion for the park on the weekends are between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
