A long-time resident of the Miller Park Zoo passed away Thursday, September 14.

Candy the Malayan Sun Bear was humanely euthanized after an exam found her physical condition was “grave.” That diagnosis came after animal care staff and a veterinarian from the University of Illinois because she’d been lethargic. Initial findings after her death indicate she had renal failure. The U of I is conducting a full necropsy.

Candy was born at Zoo Miami in 1984, and was the oldest Malayan Sun Bear in North America at the time of her death. She and her mate, Chapin, came to Miller Park Zoo in 1998. Chapin died in 2010 from bone cancer.

The median life expectancy for a female Malayan Sun Bear is 23.1 years, an age Candy surpassed by more than 10 years.
