Canton woman dies in motorcycle accident

CANTON, Ill. — A Canton woman is dead after a Saturday motorcycle accident.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 59-year-old Cheryl Zeglen died Monday. She, her husband Tom Zeglen and other motorcyclists were on County Highway Route 6 at 270 East Road in Mineral Township when they came upon a stretch of the roadway that was covered in fresh grass clippings from mowing and blowing onto the roadway.

The lead rider, Tom, raised his arm high in the air to signal the group to get into single file, to avoid travel through the grassy area; as he started to slow, he was rear-ended by Cheryl.

Cheryl was ejected from the bike on impact and was critically injured. She was transported by EMS in critical condition to Perry Memorial Medical Center and then to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Despite resuscitative efforts and aggressive treatment, Harwood said Cheryl was pronounced deceased at noon on Monday from multiple blunt force injuries. The initial drug and alcohol screen was negative and formal toxicology testing is pending.

There will be no autopsy.
