Mike Matheny is out as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team announced the dismissal of the long-time dugout leader about an hour after Saturday’s game. Matheny has been Cardinals manager since 2012. Matheny had a record of 591-473 and led the team to the post season for four straight years from 2012-2015. This included a trip to the World Series in 2013.
“Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons,” Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. “On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to wish Mike the very best.”
The Cardinals fell to 47-46 after a 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Hitting coach John Mabry and Assistant Hitting Coach Bill Mueller were also let go. Bench Coach Mike Shildt will take over as Interim Manager.
