PEORIA, Ill. — Walgreens, Greater Than AIDS and Central Illinois Friends teamed up to provide free HIV testing on National HIV Testing Day.

Advocates were located are at three different Walgreens locations in Peoria on Thursday, offering their free services from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The locations included:

  • 2515 N Knoxville Ave, Peoria
  • 221 N Western Ave, West Peoria
  • 3524 N University St, Peoria

Advocates said although it can be a scary thing to do, getting tested is the best thing for prevention. They recommend anyone who is sexually active to take advantage of this opportunity as it only takes 20 minutes to get a result.

“We are here to help you and guide you through a situation no matter how tough it might be. Fight through that fear and come out because it’s good for your health, it’s good for your community. It can be scary but again once you have that result, it’s not scary anymore,” said Alexander Martin, Outreach Coordinator at Central Illinois Friends.

Those who test negative are offered the PrEP pill, which helps prevent HIV. Central Illinois Friends said they are more than able to provide the resources needed for those who happen to test positive.

Those who got tested by Prevention Specialists received an “I Got Tested” sticker to help raise awareness.

Anyone who missed this opportunity can always reach out to Central Illinois Friends for a confidential appointment. The office is located at 120 NE Glen Oak Ave in Peoria. They can be reached at (309) 671-2144.
