PEORIA, Ill. — Dozens of local heroes took flight Tuesday morning bound for a day of honor in Washington, D.C.

The Greater Peoria Honor Flight loaded up with Veterans for the third time this year at Peoria International Airport.

Veterans from World War 2, Korean and Cold War eras, Vietnam and the Lebanon conflict, and Gulf War embarked on the journey of a lifetime– and a day packed with events visiting memorials and touring our Nation’s capital.

“This is definitely one that goes down in their memory books as one of the best days of their lives,” said Phyllis Piraino, Vice President of the Greater Peoria Honor Flight. “We always get several thank you notes after the flight from Veterans on just what this day meant to them and how special it was.”

Veterans are due in to return home 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Peoria International Airport.

Organizers encourage you to attend in support. There will be a sign-making station, as well as over a thousand community members dressed in red, white and blue.
