Changes approved to city credit card usage

A new ordinance will move elected officials to expense reimbursement.

BLOOMINGTON - Elected officials in Bloomington will no longer be permitted to carry city credit cards, or p-cards.

Earlier this year, an investigation was opened into the mayor's use of a city card to buy a plane ticket for his girlfriend during a city trip to Japan. The money was reimbursed and he has said in the past that she was there in an official capacity.

Under the new ordinance, allowable expenses, like business lunches, will be purchased by the mayor or council member and then reimbursed by the city.

Renner says he thinks the city has managed expenses well, despite the new ordinance.

"This council, this city manager, the finance director have done an excellent job of making sure that money is spent appropriately and that tax dollars are."

Alderman David Sage, who originally introduced the ordinance, has said he wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page when it came to spending city money.
