City getting money to demolish abandoned homes

Local News

The City of Peoria is receiving money to demolish abandoned houses on the city’s south side.

The Illinois Housing Development Authority awarded $150,000 to the city through its Abandoned Property Program. City leaders say demolishing some of the vacant homes removes potential locations for criminal activity, especially after a string of arsons in the area in recent months.

The grant awarded to Peoria was the largest for any downstate community.
