One dies in I-74 eastbound crash in Morton, semi driver given citation

MORTON, Ill. — One person is dead after a crash on Interstate 74 eastbound crash at Morton on Tuesday.

Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley confirmed the fatality and said accident reconstruction crews are still cleaning up the scene.

Illinois State Police say a woman driving a semi was driving eastbound around noon when she slowed down because of traffic ahead, the driver of a Honda Accord also slowed down; another semi driver was just behind the car, though he didn’t slow down and crashed into the car. Police say the car then went off the road and the second semi hit the first.

The Tazewell County Coroner says the driver of the car died at the crash site. Their identity is not yet being released. The semi drivers were taken to the hospital but are expected to recover.

The second semi driver, Mark Elbus was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Drivers were rerouted off the interstate at the Morton Avenue exit ramp until just after 5 p.m. when the roadway fully opened.
