MCLEAN COUNTY, Ill. - Illinois State Police said two men died in a Normal West school bus vs. semi crash on Interstate 74 between Downs and Bloomington Wednesday night.
Officials said 72-year-old Charles Crabtree of Normal was riding on the bus when he died. The semi driver, 34-year-old Ryan E. Hute from Delmar, Iowa, also died.
The bus was carrying 11 people involved with Normal West High School’s JV girls basketball team from a game at Champaign Central. Crabtree was a volunteer for the team. Eight were players.
Police said the semi was traveling east in the westbound lanes when it hit the bus head-on. Four students were taken to OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington in good condition. Three adults were taken to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria – two in serious condition; one in critical condition. Others were taken to Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, but there’s no word on how many.
McLean County Unit 5 spokeswoman Dayna Brown said school will be in session at NCWHS Thursday.
I-74 near Downs closed down Wednesday night. Parents were advised to go to the high school and not to the scene.
