The final touches are going on dozens of King Cakes and Paczki at a local bakery ahead of Fat Tuesday.
Le Bakery in Peoria’s Metro Center is busy getting ready for the day of indulgence. The owner says the phones are ringing for customers placing pre-orders. She says the tradition and celebration continues to grow each year.
“The awareness of Mardi Gras and the celebration of it has really increased over the couple of years so it’s just a fun time for people to get out and celebrate and have fun with what is traditionally a pretty fun holiday.” Owner of Le Bakery, Debb Robbins, said.
The Paczki are similar to a Bismark donut, filled with custard cream or fruit. The king cakes are sprinkled with traditional Mardi Gras colors and come complete with the traditional plastic baby.
“Whoever gets that piece is supposed to have good luck for the rest of the year or another story says that they have to buy the king cake next year.” Robbins explained.
The bakery is still taking pre-orders. The treats will be first come first served on Tuesday.
