Everyone in Illinois will soon have to buy a 10-year battery life smoke alarm.

Right now, both the Bloomington and Normal Fire Departments are allowing residents to receive one for free.

The offer was made possible after First Alert donated smoke detectors.

Fire crews say house fires have changed over the years and having a new detector can save a life.

Those interested in getting one can contact the Bloomington or Normal Fire Departments during their business hours.
