Former Peoria County Sheriff, State Senator dies at 88

PEORIA - George Shadid died early Saturday at the age of 88.

Shadid served as Peoria County Sheriff from 1976 to 1993. He served as the Illinois State Senator for the 46th District from 1993 to 2006.

The Peoria County Coroner says Shadid died of natural causes at his home at Heartis Village in Peoria.

Senator Dave Koehler, Shadid's successor, released the following statement about Shadid's death:

Peoria has lost a favorite son and wonderful public servant. George Shadid was not only my mentor, but he was my friend. My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Lorraine, his son Judge Jim Shadid and the entire family. He will be remembered for his frankness and honesty, always calling things as he saw them. Whether as Sheriff or State Senator, George always put the people first. We will miss him dearly.
