Former PPS Supt. remembered

A former Peoria Public School administrator is being remembered today.

Harry Whitaker who last served as PPS superintendent from 1974 to 1988, died on Sunday.

A Bradley graduate and Naval Veteran, Whitaker also served as a teacher, coach and principal of Peoria High during his 34-year career within the district.He was honored back in 2014 when The Peoria City Council named a section of North Street in Pekin after him.

Colleagues say he was a great role-model.

“He was a Peoria icon and I think anybody you talked to would say they were blessed to be able to work for and with him,” said Former Richwoods Principal John Meisinger.

Whitaker was 90 years old.
