Funeral services set for Peoria Notre Dame coach

PEORIA, Ill. -- Services have been announced for Peoria Notre Dame coach Sean Gillen.

A mass will be held saturday at 11 a.m. at the Saint Jude Catholic Church on North Knoxville Ave. in Peoria, with a viewing held one hour prior.

Gillen died saturday after suffering cardiac arrest from a heart arrythmia. He was a 2005 grad of Notre Dame and spent seven years as a coach with the Irish football team, including two seasons as head coach.

Gillen, 32 of Peoria, was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. Saturday at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Gillen was unresponsive to treatment he had received since Wednesday when he went into cardiac arrest during a workout. Gillen was taken off life support Saturday night.

Monday, Harwood said Gillen suffered cardiac arrest from a heart arrhythmia, where one's heart is beating at an unusual rhythm. It is genetic condition.
