Funnel Clouds Possible Tuesday Afternoon, August 1st…

At 12:30 PM, Emergency Management reported a funnel cloud in Woodford County two miles west of Roanoke. An upper-level low pressure moving over an unstable air mass is resulting in weak circulation. This weak circulation sometimes produces funnel clouds. These types of funnel clouds rarely reach the ground and usually dissipate once the rain starts to fall. Slow-moving thunderstorms are also dumping locally heavy rainfall. While today is NOT a severe weather alert day, keep your eye to the sky, and let us know what you see! Funnel clouds are so weak that they are extremely difficult to detect on radar; this is why reports from you are vital! You can report funnel cloud sightings (including location and time of event) to Your Local Weather Authority and/or the National Weather Service on social media.
