PEORIA - The United States has several holidays to honor past events in the country's history.
But, there is not a holiday to recognize families who have lost loved ones due to the service. Sunday kicked off Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, which helps those with the grieving process from any military loss.
The founder of the Peoria organization said it provides support within the military community.
"The whole family hurts not just the mothers or the dads the whole family hurts and so the Gold Star population is a very important part of the military community," President of Americas Gold Star Families Patti Smith said.
"We can just never do too much for them," Smith said. "So our organization is here to let them know somebody cares, somebody remembers and if you need something you can call and we can make it happen for you."
The week leads up to Gold Star Mother's Day, which will be celebrated this Sunday.
