High schooler killed in Amtrak crash

HUMBOLDT, Ill. (WCIA) - A Mattoon Community High School student was killed when an Amtrak train hit a vehicle Friday morning in Humboldt, Illinois, which is about 45 minutes south of Champaign.

Around 6:00 A.M., people nearby heard the impact and thought a train had derailed. No one on the train was hurt.

John Nisbet III was the teen killed in the crash. According to Mattoon Community School Dist. #2, Nisbet was an honor student, played tennis, and was a member of the chess team.

"We send our sympathies, support, and prayers to the family and friends of John Nisbet III," says Superintendent Lary Lilly.

The school is arranging for local clergy, counselors, and social workers for students and staff following Nisbet's death.

"As we have done in the past, our school district stands ready to help our students, staff, and families in their time of need," added Lilly.
