Illinois State Sen. pleaded not guilty to federal embezzlement charges

CHICAGO, Ill.–An Illinois State Sen. has pleaded not guilty to federal embezzlement charges.

Tom Cullerton (D-Illinois) appeared in U.S. District Court Friday to enter his plea.

He was released on a $10,000 bond.

Federal investigators say the Democratic state lawmaker was hired as an organizer for the Teamsters Union; a full-time position.

But it’s alleged Cullerton did little to no work over three years, and was still paid about $275,000 in salary and benefits.

He faces more than three dozen counts.

Since the scandal, Cullerton was stripped of a committee chairmanship.

His spokesperson says he will continue to fight the allegations.

For now, Illinois Democrats continue to back Cullerton, as many Republicans call for his resignation.
