The demolition of a civil war-era building has been postponed in Normal.
Last fall, the Normal Town Council approved an agreement with the owner of the former Illinois Soldiers and Sailers Children’s School. The building is in disrepair. According to the agreement, the owner was supposed to start the demolition by this week, and the town would reimburse him $500,000. That has not happened.
The council did vote Monday to extend the agreement, rather than seek legal action, because it would not save the town money in the end. Council members say they’re not happy the process is taking so long,
“To support this extension is really a default vote of yes, not an enthusiastic vote of yes,” says Jeff Fritzen.
R.C. McBride agrees, saying, “The way this has unfolded, I find very disappointing.”
