Jenn Carrillo, the first ever Latina elected for city council in Bloomington

Local News

New Bloomington City Council members will be sworn in on Wednesday, including the first Latina in the city’s history. Jenn Carrillo is the newly elected council member representing ward 6, which is the west side of the city.

Carrillo is originally from Mexico but was raised in Illinois. After graduating from ISU, she stayed in the area and got involved in activism. She soon realized it wasn’t enough and decided to run for office.

“My priority is to create a Bloomington for everybody. Right now I there’s kind of two Bloomington’s. If you are a person of privilege and of resource, you experience this nice community where nothing bad ever happens. The rest of us on the flip side of that coin, are experiencing difficulties with the police, fear around immigration issues,” said Carrillo.

Carrillo said her priorities at the moment will be to fight for affordable bus wages and making sure the newly appointed police chief will be the best candidate for all communities.
