PEORIA, Ill. -– The man that was shot in the face on July 6 was pronounced dead Tuesday night, marking Peoria’s 14th homicide of the year.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 24-year-old Jaware A. Cole, of Helen Street, was shot in the face around the area of R.B. Garrett, Richard Pryor PL, and Hightower St. The Peoria Police Department first responded to the scene just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, on a report of shots fired, with two victims who had been shot.
One victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; the other, Cole, was driven by private vehicle to UnityPoint Methodist with a gunshot wound to the face. He was later transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition over the last week and half.
Cole had a decline in his condition, and despite efforts, succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m. Tuesday. Autopsy findings showed he suffered a single gunshot wound to the face, suffering internal injuries.
Although he survived the initial insult, he suffered detrimental medical complications from those internal injuries, Harwood said. The caliber of the weapon is not being released.
The case remains under investigation by the PPD.
