The investigation into a possible inappropriate relationship between Peoria’s Police Chief and a female employee began last summer. That’s according to the Peoria Journal Star.
Chief Jerry Mitchell suddenly retired from the department last month. A report released Saturday indicates Peoria City Administration began having legal opinions on the matter drafted last July. Three complaints were received over the last several months, including at least one from a police employee. Both the complainant and the woman allegedly involved with Mitchell have obtained legal counsel.
Mitchell and the female employee deny the affair. The complaints allege an affair and preferential treatment, including pay raises for the employee.
The Journal Star report indicates the third party hired by the city to investigate the claims found no wrongdoing at this point. Chief Mitchell retired before the investigation’s conclusion. The investigation was not cited officially as his reason for retiring.
