A lawsuit was filed against Tazewell County and Tazewell County Sherriff Robert M. Huston after an inmate was found dead in his cell Aug. 26, 2017.

According to the lawsuit, 31-year-old Jerad M. Traylor was found unresponsive in the Special Housing Unit (SHU). He reportedly had requested medical attention, complaining he was having difficulty breathing, as well as sweating profusely.

Representatives of Traylor’s estate are now suing the county.

The lawsuit, filed by Meyer & Kiss, LLC, stated fellow detainees in the SHU heard Traylor asking for help and stating he could not breathe. Representatives also said surveillance video shows Traylor struggling to breathe hours before his death.

Huston had said Traylor had died of natural causes.

WMBD reached out to Tazewell County Board and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office for comments.
