Man dead, deputy injured after shooting in rural Mackinaw

The man involved in a shooting with officers from Tazewell County in Mackinaw has been identified as 18-year-old Matthew G. Brown, of 34368 State Route 9, Mackinaw.

Autopsy results show Brown died from multiple gunshot wounds and internal bleeding.

He had five penetrating wounds with exits.

One person is dead and a Sheriff’s Deputy hospitalized after a Friday morning shooting in Tazewell County.

The Sheriff’s office was called to the scene just before 9:30 for a report of a suicidal male.

 An 18-year-old man was trying to break into a gun cabinet with an ax and a knife.

Chief Deputy Jeff Lower says when his crews arrived on scene, the man came toward them with a gun and shot at them. One or more of the deputies returned fire, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

The 25-year-veteran officer has been transported to UnityPoint Health Methodist Hospital per policy and has been released.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says the man had multiple gunshot wounds.

As of right now there’s no word exactly how many times he was shot.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.
