The 27-year-old man who died Monday night after a crash on Interstate 55 has been identified as Zachary Doyle of Hammond, Indiana.
It happened around 11:00 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-55 near Lexington. The Chenoa Police Department stopped his vehicle for an equipment violation. A police officer asked the driver to get out of the vehicle and the driver complied, but then fled on foot southbound on the right shoulder of the interstate.
A McLean County Deputy pursued the driver on foot. The driver ran out into the lanes, where he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
He was taken to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The man’s name won’t be released until his family is notified.
The McLean County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police are investigating.
All lanes of traffic are now open.
