Man indicted for Taft Homes stabbing

PEORIA, Ill. — The man accused of fatally stabbing a woman at Taft Homes in Peoria was indicted. 

Lester Broom, 49 of Peoria, was indicted on a first degree murder charge, for the stabbing death of 58-year-old Shirley M. King. King was pronounced deceased at the scene at 11:32 p.m. Sunday. 

In court, bond was set at $1,500,000. 

Autopsy findings showed King suffered a single stab wound to her upper back, injuring vital internal organs and vessels. She had no other injuries. Toxicology is pending, however will not have any bearing on her cause of death.

Broom was taken into custody without incident at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Monday, police said. He was subsequently arrested for First Degree Murder after being taken to the Peoria Police Department. 

His arraignment is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
