PEORIA, Ill. – The General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport (PIA) saw nearly 62,000 passengers through its doors this past May.
That number of passengers represents the busiest month of May ever for the airport, and is also third busiest month in the airport’s history. The airport had never exceeded 60,000 passengers in a month until March, 2015, and has done so nine times since then and twice already this year.
The total of 61,848 passengers departing and arriving from PIA represents the fourth month of record breaking passenger counts at PIA this year, which is up 2.6% from last May’s total, which was also a record at that time.
“We were able to achieve this remarkable number of passengers during May in spite of the wet weather and construction on Dirksen Parkway,” said Gene Olson, Director of Airports for the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria. “The best part is that we did it without running out of parking spaces. We’re still crunching the numbers to see how we did in June, but we’re hoping for good news,” said Olson.
The total number of passengers using PIA so far in 2019 is 280,905, which is up from last year’s record pace by about 2.7%.
