PEORIA, Ill. — Midstate College is closing down next month.
The Peoria-area college that was active for over 130 years is permanently ceasing operations Aug. 14. The college’s president and CEO Meredith Bunch announced the closure to students in an email on Monday.
Bunch said the decision was made Friday, and that the college was hoping to have a partnership with another educational institution, however it fell through. She also said the college ran out of funding, and that school officials are working on transfer arrangements with educational partners.
She said she was “devastated” about the closing and felt sorry they cannot “continue to offer” services in the Peoria area.
Bunch said there are currently 183 students enrolled, and that 45 students applied to start school in the fall.
From 5-7 p.m. Aug. 13, Midstate College is hosting a transfer fair with education partners to give students different options.
Midstate College offered a master’s program in business administration, as well as bachelor’s degrees in science, accounting, health services management, law, and more.
The college’s most recent summer term began May 20.
Its origins trace back to 1857, when a commercial school first opened in Peoria. In 1865, a similar school opened, and the two merged in 1888, creating Brown’s Business College of Commerce.
The college was renamed in 1965.
Impacted students who may need any financial assistance can visit the Federal Student Aid website.
The email Bunch sent to students reads:
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you today that Midstate College will cease operations at the end of the summer 2019 term on August 14, 2019.
We will work with you to provide transfer options where you can complete your academic programs at another institution. This process may take a little time, so please bear with us as we try to accommodate all students to the extent possible with a path forward for you education.
We have treasured you as students and enjoyed working with you on your educational aspirations. I hope you carry with you fond memories of your time with Midstate College.
We wish you all the best as you continue onward with your educational journeys.Meredith Bunch, Midstate College President
