Monarch butterfly release connects children to nature

PEORIA, Ill. — Monarch butterflies are migrating south and preschoolers at United Presbyterian Church got to be a part of their journey.

The kids have been studying butterflies and even watched their own grow.

They started off as caterpillars, were fed milkweed, and formed their chrysalises to become butterflies.

On Sunday, the kids released the butterflies, and kids and adults, watched in awe.

“We feel a lot of children are stuck inside, on their electronics, just not getting that outside experience. So, we brought the caterpillars in,” said Lora Taylor, the director of the UPC discovery preschool.

The butterflies were also tagged before being released so that they can be tracked and studied.
