Murder suspect indicted by grand jury in connection with death of missing woman

LACON, Ill. — A Marshall County grand jury indicted the Edelstein man accused of murdering a previously-reported missing Peoria County woman, burning her body and hiding it.

On Friday, 39-year-old Gary Berchtold was indicted on four counts, reflecting what he was charged with; two counts of first-degree murder, one count of dismembering a human body and one count of a concealed homicidal death.

Berchtold is accused of killing Tiffini Murphy, who was last seen around a year ago.

An arraignment hearing is set for Monday afternoon at the Marshall County Courthouse. A preliminary hearing was previously set for that day, before Berchtold was indicted.

This all comes after Marshall County authorities were led by a witness to a property on the Marshall-Peoria County Line last month, where they found remains that included bones and hair.

Berchtold’s bond is set at $1 million.
