National Drug Take Back Day is taking place on Saturday

Local News

Leaders at Illinois American Water are encouraging  people to participate in the National Drug Take Back Day this Saturday.

They’re asking people to bring medications they no longer need, to collection sites. The goal is to dispose of them correctly in an effort to keep medications out of our water system.

“If they’re flushed down the drain they will eventually enter the water way. Iif it’s put in the garbage and then ends up in a landfill, it can go into groundwater so it’s really important to prevent that. Also it’s important to protect our youth. We don’t want unwanted medications within reach of someone looking to abuse or misuse them,” said Karen Cotton, spokesperson for Illinois American Water.

The community is able to drop off any expired or unused medications year-round at their local law enforcement offices.
