PEORIA, Ill.– Peoria Zoo welcomed its newest addition to the community Tuesday.
Dixie, a Thomson’s gazelle, was born May 5 to parents Johnnie and June.
Thomson’s gazelle live in herds of up to 200 members and can weigh up to 65 pounds. They breed twice a year and most births come right after the rainy seasons.
Currently, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, they are labeled near threatened and are part of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival plan.
Dixie can be seen in the giraffe and gazelle yard daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
